What is MACADA Milestones?

MACADA Milestones is a guided professional development program designed to help academic advisors grow their skills, engage with the advising community, and reach meaningful career milestones. The program is structured around three progressive stages—each designed to recognize and celebrate advisors as they grow, evolve, and excel in their professional journey.

Through various participation opportunities, you can track your progress, gain recognition for your achievements, and contribute to the success of your institution. Explore the pathways to reaching each milestone and submit your progress today!

Choose activities from various milestone categories
Complete the activity (e.g., attend, present, mentor, contribute)
Submit documentation using the online participation form

Submit Milestone Participation

How do you reach a milestone?

Milestone 1 is achieved by completing three activities from Category 1.

Milestone 2 is achieved after reaching Milestone 1 status and completing two activities from Categories 2 and/or 3.

Milestone 3 is achieved by completing two additional activities after reaching Milestone 2 status. At least one of these activities must come from Category 3.

Current Milestone 3 Members can maintain status by completing at least one activity in Category 2 or 3 per year.

Attend a Munch ‘N MACADA session or other MACADA-sponsored training

Learn about the NACADA Core Advising Competencies and submit a one-page summary
Explore different advising styles and submit a one-page reflection
Develop a one-page advising philosophy

Plan Your Advising Growth

Develop an advising growth plan and review it with your supervisor for feedback

Category 2: Engaging in Leadership

Contribute to Personal Development

Present at an advising workshop or training session
Present at a MACADA conference
Participate in an advising panel discussion
Write and submit a review of an advising-related journal article

Support MACADA Through Service

Serve on the MACADA Executive Board
Conduct a survey of MACADA members

Take Initiative in Advising Leadership

Form a committee or start/lead an initiative for MACADA

Category 3: Advancing Advising Knowledge

Contribute to the Advising Profession

Publish in an advising-related publication (MACADA, NACADA, or other)
Present at a state or regional conference
Conduct an advising research project

Demonstrate advising techniques through role-play (video or written)

Engage in Leadership & Mentorship

Start or lead a committee at your institution related to advising
Participate in a mentorship program as a mentee

▶ How is my participation tracked?

A rotating committee reviews submissions quarterly and the Vice President of Membership tracks progress/renewals accordingly. Consider volunteering for the review committee as part of your participation!
